“FANGS” VERY MUCH STEVE STEINMAN – YOU MADE AN AWFUL LOT OF PEOPLE VERY HAPPY LAST NIGHT.
It’s not often a musical night has people howling with laughter but Steinman’s revamped show, Vampires Rock: The Ghost Train, did just that.
Part rock concert, part ghost story and part pantomime, it was at times, laugh-out-loud funny thanks to the comedy timing and showmanship of its creator, director and frontman, Steinman.
Constantly stepping out of character – he played Baron Von Rockula, a 100 year old vampire trapped in a fairground – to engage with the audience. He was the undoubted star of a show that was at times so cheesy, it should have come with a health warning.
“It doesn’t get much better than this,”he said after delivering one particularly ancient gag.
He was right, but that is part of the joy of this show which is packed with corny jokes and has a very simple plot.
And yet, it’s fantastic – pure entertainment presented by a top notch group of musicians, singers and dancers who pulled out all the stops to present an evening you’ll remember long after the last fake blood capsule has been spurted.
Steve’s band delivered a soundtrack of classic rock anthems from the likes of AC/DC, Alice Cooper, Queen , Bon Jovi and Meat Loaf to name but a few. Outstanding numbers for me included a slow version of Bonnie Tyler’s I Need A Hero, and a heavy rock version of Soft Cell’s Tainted Love.
As the ghost train hurtled towards its last stop, the theatre rocked to the rafters as the audience danced and sang along to class hits such as, Jump, We Will Rock You and Crazy, Crazy Nights from Kiss.
Great music, great dancers and a real hoot of a show from start to finish.
There was no encore, but Steve returned to the stage to chat with fans for several minutes before reminding them he’ll be back in on Wednesday, March 14 with his show, The Meat Loaf Story (tickets have almost sold out), and will return with Vampires Rock in 2019 with guest star, X Factor’s Sam Bailey.
